Website Long Term Planning is Unrealistic?

Your creating a website? so lets talk long term strategies. Should you have them? Should you not?

I believe long term strategies are crucial, because you want your website to last right? The idea is to build and grow your website into a successful platform for its viewers and/or consumers.

In my view, Amazon wasn’t an online powerhouse the first day it launched. It has built and grown into the success it is today (and it’s still growing).

Below are a few influences that emphasie the need for long term strategies:

Trust:

A key influence of building and growing a successful website is trust. Viewers need to trust what your website is about and this doesn’t just appear on day one. Over time viewers will trust in your website, which creates loyalty and increases your viewing numbers.

Stability:

A long term goal for your website should be stability. Establishing a solid viewer base and place in your chosen market will help you remain sustainable.

Exposure:

Constantly marketing your logo, slogans and brand will raise the exposure and benefit your website in the long term. Advertising your brand in the short term may not produce large viewer numbers, however, as more and more people see your website and talk about your brand, your exposure will increase.

Finance:

In many cases, businesses don’t turn over huge profits when they first open. The successful financial position is built over a long period. This emphasies the need for long term planning in finance. At the start of the year, you may be outlaying high costs in production, marketing and labour. However, over time as revenue is recieved, your short term costs will be offset. Hence, estimating your financial position a year or two years from now can help you make the calculated decisions to invest and grow your website. Your financial position may not be able to accommodate all your goals at once, therefore, long term financial planning is crucial.

Market Growth:

Combining the above elements of trust, exposure and stability, along with accumulating loyal customers, opens your website to penetrate into new markets. In your long term planning, you may target new markets each year. For example, you may start with just selling menswear, then once established expand into womens clothing, then eventually kidswear. A long term goal after this could be to produce and sell your own line of clothing. Geographical goals can also be set long term. You may start just in Australia, then build your logistics to serve Europe, then North America.

Remember, long term planning is all about growth!
